The solutions are based on enabling managers to draw on information that is locked in the corporation's data bases about factors such as customers, competitors, business partners, economic environment and internal operations - information that is not currently made available through the transactional processing systems that these applications are designed for. Through what is called an ETL (Extraction, Transformation, Loading) process, this information is culled from the corporation's transaction databases and then presented to the managers concerned through a presentation layer that resembles a dashboard. The dashboard has a set of dials and gauges pretty much like that of an automobile, are extremely interactive and easy to read, with each dial or gauge tracking a specific parameter that is of relevance for the manager for whom the dashboard is designed.
